Carb Binge

So I've been back on fast 5 for a couple of weeks now (after a successful weight loss stint in 2010), and I haven been IF every day for a bit over a week now. As I have around 50lbs to lose, I'm trying to incorporate low(er) carb into this new lifestyle, as well.

Last night I had a total carb binge. Basically everything I consumed last night was carb-laden. Today I am miserable - disappointed, somewhat defeated and ashamed, and very hungry.

I welcome any advice, and my question is this - because I ate so many carbs last night, I'm sure I bumped myself out of ketosis. How long will it take to restore my body to a fat-burning state and to rid itself of last night's damage?

Many thanks.

If I remember well the book of Dr.Herring, ketosis need between 2 ou 3 weeks before happening actually. This is the time needed to be fully adjusted.

You can check my precedent posts, I was food addict during the first 2-3 weeks of Fast-5 and that's OK.

Naturally you will be driven toward more healthy food if you persist to stay on Fast-5.

One thing I do is to eat low-carb during the week days, and eat whatever I want during week-end.

It work well and I don't feel deprivated of anything I like.

Just be persistent, you will succeed. ;)

I guess we don't have a lot of people in these forums, but if you are still interested or for people that have the same question, this may be beneficial.

How long your body restores to ketosis depends on the amount of carbs you ate. After a carb binge, most of the calories you consumed will go replenish your glycogen stores in your liver and muscles. To go back into ketosis, these stores must be depleted first. If you go back into a low carb diet, it can take anywhere from a day to a week (depending on what you ate previously and how much carbs you allow on your diet, and also how much physical activity you do).

You shouldn't get so worried about it. You most likely did not gain fat (as I mentioned above, most go to replenish glycogen stores). Be aware though, that when you go on a carb binge, the increased carbohydrate will cause your body to retain more water than usual. You may even see you weight go up 5 lbs the very next day. You should lose this extra water over the next three days if you go back to your normal diet, and get back into ketosis rather quickly.

To even calm you down a bit, look up "Cyclical Ketogenic Diets" online. These diets are low carb for 5-6 days a week and high carb for 1-2 days a week on purpose! And people lose weight doing these kinds of diets. So your binge, so as long as it is not every day, should be fine.

I thought this was Fast 5 not the Atkins diet? You can eat what you like, not just low carb???

Fast-5 and low carb diets accomplish the same thing (keeping insulin low) by different means, but the effect is the same and the two can be complementary. Ketosis occurs with fat-burning, so it happens with both methods when fat is being used as the primary fuel. This is As the body adapts to burning ketones, the initial signs of ketosis ("fruity" or acetone breath odor, ketones detectable on urine dipstick (Ketostix) testing) may become less noticeable even though ketone production hasn't changed and may even be increased.
